  • Tax planning and tax preparation work is structured as a 1099 independent contractor engagement
  • Shepard FINANCIAL will refer and assign clients for tax services
  • This role is supported by firm-provided client relationships and is not exclusively dependent on self-sourced business, while offering opportunities for responsible practice growth. An entrepreneurial mindset is an asset.

  • There is a clearly defined opportunity to expand into financial planning and advisory work under a separate compensation structure (e.g., W-2, hybrid, or revenue-based), if mutually desired.
Key Responsibilities (Initial Tax-Focused Scope)
  • Prepare and review individual and business tax returns for firm clients and referred clients
  • Provide proactive, year-round tax planning aligned with financial and investment strategies
  • Collaborate closely with financial advisors on retirement, estate, and investment‑related tax decisions
  • Serve as primary tax advisor for assigned clients
  • Provide accounting support, financial statements, and analysis for business‑owner clients
  • Identify tax‑efficient strategies related to income planning, entity structure, deductions, and timing
  • Clearly communicate complex tax concepts in a planning‑focused, client‑friendly way
  • Support clients through major life events (liquidity events, retirement, business transitions)
Business Development & Collaboration
  • Receive a steady flow of clients from Shepard FINANCIAL
  • Opportunity (not requirement) to introduce and develop additional client relationships
  • Collaborate with advisors on cross‑referrals and integrated planning opportunities
  • Participate in the ongoing development of the firm’s tax and accounting offerings
Growth Opportunity (Optional, Not Required)

For the right candidate, Shepard FINANCIAL offers a path to:

  • Expanded involvement in financial planning engagements
  • Delivery of tax‑aware financial advice
  • Potential pursuit of CFP® or other planning credentials
  • Transition to a different compensation and employment structure for advisory work

This expansion would be mutually agreed upon and structured separately from the 1099 tax engagement.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2–3+ years of experience in tax preparation, accounting, or advisory‑focused tax work
  • Strong knowledge of individual and small business taxation
  • Experience with tax prep software and accounting platforms (Quick Books, Xero)
  • Comfortable in a client‑facing advisory role
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with interest in growing a practice
  • Strong organizational, communication, and deadline management skills
  • CPA not required; CFP® or interest in financial planning is a plus
