Large defense contractor in the Washington DC area is looking for an Assistant Controller with 15 plus years of experience. This is a newly created position reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer. Remote work environment but the client wants someone living on the east coast. Ideal candidate will have a mix of public accounting and corporate accounting experience with a government contractor.

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our finance team. The successful candidate will support the financial operations of our publicly traded defense contracting firm, ensuring compliance with government regulations and contributing to the financial strategy of the organization. This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, as well as experience in a government contracting environment.
Key Responsibilities- Assist the Controller in managing all accounting operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
- Oversee the preparation of financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and government regulations.
- Support the audit process by preparing documentation and working closely with external auditors.
- Assist with compliance to Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS).
- Partner with internal teams to provide financial insights and support project execution and performance analysis.
- Monitor financial transactions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company policies.
- Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Participate in the development of financial policies and procedures.
- Assist in month‑end and year‑end closing processes.
- Prepare reports for executive management and stakeholders, including variance analysis and financial performance metrics.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the government contracting space.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, FAR, and CAS.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., ERP systems) and MS Office Suite.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with cross‑functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
