Senior Finance Generalist or Finance Generalist – Dean’s Office Budget and Finance Team
Position within the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (A&S). Reports to the Finance Manager and works with budget & finance team, department managers, fiscal administrators, and external stakeholders. Must be comfortable in a complex environment and serve multiple departments.
Senior Finance Generalist Responsibilities- Produce, reconcile, and distribute financial reports for a wide range of funding sources within the Dean’s Office and across A&S.
- Examine cash balances periodically, invest funds, or spend appropriately to ensure optimal cash management.
- Assist with reviewing and cataloging funding commitments.
- Monitor chart of account use (FDM) to ensure departments maintain consistency and budget alignment.
- Manage or assist with projects such as the Equipment Trust Fund (ETF) process, asset management, stewardship of Dean’s Office endowments and gifts, reinvestments, and year‑end closing.
- Produce financial and/or data analysis as requested by A&S units and departments.
- Provide assistance with account certification, expense reports, and purchasing, either directly or as a back‑up.
- Troubleshoot various issues that arise and require quick analysis and turnaround.
- Manage the Budget and Finance team shared email inbox – monitor traffic and elevate issues.
- Assist with account preparation and certification as needed.
- Process payroll accounting adjustments and journal entries.
- Oversee and or assist with the preparation of purchase orders and payment vouchers, ensuring bills are paid promptly and in compliance with University requirements, and resolve discrepancies.
- Monitor and record details of faculty contracts and other commitments within internal and external systems.
- Review audit and monitoring reports daily to ensure transactions comply with University and A&S policies; notify stakeholders of errors or issues.
- Provide ongoing support and back‑up for Dean’s Office Budget and Finance team members.
- Attend and participate in University and School meetings (e.g., A&S Departmental Manager and UVA Fiscal Administrators meetings) and share information with stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Finance Generalist: 2 years’ experience in a related field strongly preferred.
- Senior Finance Generalist: 5 years’ experience in a related field strongly preferred.
- Problem‑solving skills and ability to recognize when a problem should be escalated.
- Microsoft Office experience, with at least intermediate‑level skills in Excel.
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
Salary RangeThe anticipated hiring range is $70,000+, commensurate with education and experience.
Position Type & Work LocationExempt‑level, benefited position. Based in Charlottesville, VA, requiring a hybrid schedule of at least 2 days in the office each week, with additional on‑site presence as needed, in accordance with UVA’s remote work guidelines.
