Position Purpose

Plays a leadership role in the design, development and oversight of critical procedures and systems related to the accounting and reporting of Dartmouth's financial transactions. Directs all aspects of the Financial Reporting department to ensure the accuracy of external financial reports and tax returns. Provides guidance to staff and other financial managers throughout the institution on accounting and reporting matters. Works closely with the Information Technology & Consulting department on initiatives related to Oracle Financials modules.

Identifies and leads change management and process improvement tasks for accounting and reporting functions around the institution. Develops and maintains strong relationships with external auditors and other service providers.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Financial Management, or related field. 6 or more years of experience (or equivalent education and experience). 7 to ten years of relevant experience in a related field. Previous supervisory experience. CPA required.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting and taxes for complex not‑for‑profit organizations, preferably higher education.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, FASB and higher education reporting standards.
  • Excellent analytical/critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to plan work, set priorities and manage multiple priorities, and adapt to changes in schedules.
  • Knowledge of internal controls.
  • Highly proficient with computer applications, such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe; familiarity with complex financial systems, preferably Oracle.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Initiative, sound judgment and ability to work independently.
  • Commitment to diversity; ability to work effectively with all constituencies in a diverse institution.

Key Accountabilities Leadership and Management (35%)
  • Lead day‑to‑day activities and long‑term planning of the Financial Reporting and Endowment & Investment Accounting teams.
  • Work cross‑functionally with customers in different schools and departments; serve as main contact for accounting questions across campus.
  • Direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and priorities; evaluate work processes to streamline and gain efficiencies.
  • Manage, hire, evaluate, and provide support and training to staff.
  • Provide support to the Tax Manager to ensure timely completion of all tax filings; review returns to ensure accuracy; analyze major new tax reporting changes and communicate issues to those affected.
  • Develop and manage financial reporting policies and processes; provide input on related policy matters and initiatives within Finance and Administration and across campus.
  • Ensure the integrity of Oracle General Ledger; work with the Director of Institutional Accounting and Controller to evaluate necessary changes to rules, security settings, and access.
Fiscal Close and External Reporting (35%)
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee year‑end close and external audit.
  • Plan and communicate campus‑wide fiscal year‑end responsibilities, including key dates and IT support.
  • Plan and communicate Financial Reporting and Endowment & Investment Accounting Team fiscal year‑end work; facilitate timely fiscal close and preparation of year‑end workbook to support financial statements and audit.
  • Analyze new FASB reporting requirements, inform senior management of implications, develop programs and procedures to respond, and work with others across campus to implement appropriate plans.
  • Review detailed year‑end support for financial statements; compile financial statements and footnotes.
