Position PurposePlays a leadership role in the design, development and oversight of critical procedures and systems related to the accounting and reporting of Dartmouth’s financial transactions. Directs all aspects of the Financial Reporting department to ensure the accuracy of external financial reports and tax returns. Provides guidance to fiscal officers and other financial managers throughout the institution on financial accounting and reporting matters.
Works closely with the Information Technology & Consulting department on initiatives related to Oracle Financials modules. Plays a leadership role on the Controller’s Office management team, identifies and leads change management and process improvement tasks for accounting and reporting related functions around the institution, and develops and maintains strong relationships with external auditors and other service providers.
- Lead day‑to‑day activities and long‑term planning of the Financial Reporting and Endowment and Investment Accounting teams.
- Work cross‑functionally with customers in the different schools and departments; main contact for accounting questions across campus.
- Direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and priorities in this area and evaluate work processes to streamline and gain efficiencies.
- Manage, hire, evaluate and provide support and training to staff.
- Provide support to the Tax Manager to ensure timely completion of all tax filings including 990, 990T and related entity filings, review returns for accuracy, and analyze effects of major new tax reporting changes.
- Play a leadership role in developing and managing Dartmouth’s financial reporting policies and processes and provide input on other related policy matters and initiatives.
- Ensure the integrity of Oracle General Ledger, working with the Director of Institutional Accounting and Controller to evaluate changes to rules, security settings and access.
- Plan, coordinate and oversee year‑end close and external audit; communicate campus‑wide fiscal year‑end responsibilities, facilitate timely fiscal close, and support audit preparations.
- Analyze new FASB reporting requirements, inform senior management, develop programs and procedures to respond to changes, and implement plans campus‑wide.
- Review detailed year‑end support for financial statements, compile statements and footnotes, and facilitate financial statement review with stakeholders.
- Liaise with external auditors during interim and year‑end audit processes; main point of contact for auditors.
- Perform reconciliation between GAAP financial statements and internal operating statements.
- Lead efforts to complete additional financial reporting (employee benefit plans, related entity statements, Uniform Guidance report, NCAA Agreed‑Upon Procedures).
- Provide high‑level service to fiscal officers and financial managers across campus; research and resolve issues related to implementation of accounting and reporting policies and procedures.
