My client is one of the largest financial institutions headquartered in Japan, with an established presence across all consumer and corporate banking businesses. Through its subsidiaries and affiliates, they offer a diverse range of financial services, including commercial banking, leasing, securities, credit card, consumer finance and other services.

They are looking for Non-Financial Risk and Controls (1

LOD) on a 12-month contract. You will be expected to work Monday to Friday standard office hours, however there will need to be flexibility to work outside of these hours as required. The position is hybrid working being in the office 2-3 days a week with the remainder of time working from home.

This role supports the uplift of the Non-Financial Risk Framework within the 1st Line of Defence, ensuring compliance with EMEA regulatory expectations and enhancing operational resilience. It plays a key role in embedding a proactive risk culture and strengthening the control environment across the business. You will be supporting their rapidly growing Global Banking business.

Key Responsibilities

Embed a robust risk and control framework across the SFS and CIB businesses, ensuring alignment with business strategy, regulatory expectations and operational resilience requirements.
Lead risk reviews, control assessments and thematic deep dives, delivering clear root‑cause analysis and driving sustainable remediation of control weaknesses.
Act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders on risk mitigation, control design, issue management and best‑practice oversight standards.
Oversee and enhance KYC/CDD processes, including documentation standards, control testing, workflow optimisation and backlog clearance.
Provide expertise across sanctions screening, AML considerations and financial crime-related risks, ensuring controls and processes remain compliant and effective.
Support client exit processes, ensuring decisions and documentation meet policy, regulatory and risk‑appetite requirements.
Produce high‑quality risk MI for governance forums and contribute to regulatory readiness through accurate reporting and clear articulation of risks, issues and actions.

LoD teams to ensure consistent alignment with internal policies, group frameworks and external regulatory standards.

Competencies & Experience Required

Proven experience in a private‑side, business‑aligned non‑financial risk team within Global Banking, Structured Lending, Capital Markets or Advisory, with strong understanding of operational, conduct and financial crime risks.
Hands‑on 1st Line of Defence experience in risk identification, assessment, control design/testing, thematic reviews, issue management, root‑cause analysis and remediation.
Strong capability in KYC/CDD, including documentation, control optimisation, sanctions screening, AML exposure and managing client exit processes.
Demonstrated ability to embed and uplift risk and control frameworks, support governance forums, produce clear risk MI, and ensure alignment with EMEA regulatory expectations.
Strong analytical skills with excellent stakeholder engagement, able to act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders and collaborate effectively across 2

LoD.
