Birmingham (SCC operate hybrid working, which comprises of a mix of office and home working)

Contract Type:

Salary Package:

£48,000- £55,000 plus large company benefits, a broad flexible benefits scheme, and 2 paid‑for volunteering days a year

9.00 am – 5.30 pm Monday – Friday

Role Purpose

As Tax Accountant, your primary purpose is to ensure accurate and timely compliance with all applicable tax regulations. You will be responsible for preparing tax returns and managing tax reporting processes. This role involves monitoring legislative changes, assessing their impact on the business, and implementing solutions to minimise risk and maximise efficiency. By collaborating with internal teams and external authorities, you will safeguard the company’s financial integrity and support informed decision‑making through proactive tax advice.

Key Responsibilities
  • VAT Management
    . Prepare and review accurate VAT returns for all applicable jurisdictions (currently UK, Netherlands and Ireland), ensuring timely submission and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • PSA Return
    . Manage the process for collating the data for the PSA return. This involves understanding the Staff Expenses process and identifying what information should be brought into the PSA return.
  • Corporation Tax
    . Work closely with the Group Tax Team to provide analysis and reporting to form the basis of the annual tax computation. Identify unusual or one‑off items for discussion with the Group Tax Team. Understand the cash inflows/outflows relating to tax and discuss with the Treasury Accountant.
  • Documentation and Controls
    . Maintain best practices for documenting tax processes and controls including maintenance of SCC’s Tax Risk Control Framework. Report risks against the framework to support adherence and compliance with the Senior Accounting Officer Regime.
  • Continuous Improvement
    . Identify opportunities to streamline tax processes and enhance efficiency through automation and system improvements.
  • Audit Support
    . Assist with internal and external audits by providing accurate tax‑related documentation and explanations.
  • Business Advice
    . Support the Tax Finance Manager in working closely with finance teams, commercial departments, and external authorities to resolve tax issues and ensure accurate treatment of transactions.
  • Legislative Monitoring
    . Track changes in tax laws and regulations, assess their impact on the business, and implement necessary adjustments to maintain compliance.
Skills and Experience
  • Qualifications: Recognised accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with a strong academic background in tax and finance.
  • Experience: Proven experience in tax accounting and compliance, preferably within a multinational or complex business environment. Background in VAT management is essential.
  • Technical Knowledge: In‑depth understanding of UK tax legislation, VAT processes, and corporate tax principles. Familiarity with tax reporting systems and ERP platforms.
  • Analytical

    Skills:

    Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with the capability to interpret complex tax regulations and provide practical solutions.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tax matters clearly to non‑specialists and collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Attention to Detail:
    High level of accuracy and diligence in preparing tax returns and documentation.
  • Adaptability:
    Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment and respond proactively to legislative changes.
  • Technology

    Skills:

    Competence in using financial systems and tools for tax reporting and analysis; experience with automation or process improvement initiatives is desirable.
