Position: Head of Finance - Volunteer Role

📍 Berkshire | Home-based with occasional meetings in Bracknell

⏱ Approx. 5 hours per week

Berkshire Lowland Search and Rescue (BLSAR) is looking for a Head of Finance to join our Leadership Team and help guide the long-term sustainability of a vital emergency service.

BLSAR is a wholly volunteer run search and rescue charity supporting:

  • Thames Valley Police in the search for high-risk vulnerable missing people
  • Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service with water-based searches and drone support
  • Local authorities during flooding and major incidents

Behind every operational deployment is strong governance and financial oversight. This role plays a key part in ensuring we can continue delivering our life-saving work.

The Role

As Head of Finance
, you will sit on the Leadership Team and report to the Board of Trustees. You’ll provide strategic financial leadership while ensuring robust financial management across the charity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide financial leadership and oversight
  • Maintain financial policies, controls and procedures
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting
  • Ensure compliance with UK charity and financial regulations
  • Manage insurance and financial risk
  • Support strategic planning and long-term sustainability
  • Present financial updates to the Leadership Team and Trustees
About you
  • Experience in financial management or accounting
  • Knowledge of UK charity financial and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to present complex financial information clearly
  • Strong IT skills (including Microsoft tools)
  • Excellent organisation and attention to detail
Preferred
  • Previous finance role in a charity or nonprofit
  • Financial planning and budget management experience

    Knowledge of charity governance and compliance
