About the role

We’re looking for a highly skilled Senior Finance Officer to join our Finance team and play a key role in delivering robust financial accounting, statutory reporting and financial governance across the organisation.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced finance professional with strong technical accounting knowledge who enjoys solving complex financial issues, working accurately under pressure and supporting high-quality financial reporting. You’ll work closely with the Corporate Accountant to ensure the Authority meets its statutory obligations while continuously improving financial processes and controls.

What you’ll be doing
  • Support the production of the Authority’s Statement of Accounts, preparing working papers, reconciliations, journals and supporting schedules in line with the CIPFA Code of Practice.
  • Maintain and reconcile key balance sheet accounts, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
  • Lead on statutory returns, including transparency reporting, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns while supporting VAT compliance across the Authority.
  • Maintain the fixed asset register, including depreciation, disposals, additions and reconciliations.
  • Manage the grant register, ensuring grant income and conditions are accurately recorded and reconciled.
  • Lead the corporate card reconciliation process, ensuring transactions are correctly authorised, coded and recorded.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing high-quality working papers and responding to audit queries.
  • Contribute to strengthening financial controls, governance and continuous improvement across the finance function.
  • Provide technical financial advice to colleagues and build positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Strong technical and analytical financial accounting skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality financial information.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines.
  • Experience supporting the production of statutory accounts and financial reporting.
  • Experience preparing complex reconciliations and resolving financial discrepancies.
  • Experience liaising confidently with auditors and a range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to finance and non-finance colleagues.
  • A sound understanding of financial controls, governance and statutory reporting requirements.
  • A proactive approach to improving financial processes and systems.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience contributing to financial process improvements.
