Join our team as a Certified Police Officer – Homeland Security Unit! We’re looking for highly motivated and skilled law enforcement professionals to support critical homeland security operations and safeguard our community during special events and beyond.

As a Certified Police Officer in the Homeland Security Unit, you’ll play a key role in supporting the City’s Homeland Security mission. Responsibilities include providing security and operational support during special events, managing traffic control, and conducting routine police patrols—particularly in maritime environments. This role is ideal for officers with a strong sense of duty, adaptability, and a commitment to public safety in high-profile or high-security settings.


* This position is considered to be a “long-term rotation” position, as defined in the Division’s Policy and Procedure #641 Position Assignment Management. As such, selected members are subject to transfer to other positions within the Division, after a period of 3 to 5 years.


Minimum Requirements

  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent, preferably supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in Police Science or related field of study preferred.
  • Must hold current DCJS certification as a Police Officer, as defined in Virginia Code: 9.1-101.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must be able to pass a Division swim test.
  • Must currently be certified as a Police Officer in Virginia, as defined in Virginia Code: 9.1-101.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
  • Must pass City physical examination, background investigation (to include polygraph examination), and physical agility examination.
  • Must successfully pass testing for alcohol and controlled substances.
  • Must be able to operate a police patrol boat.
  • Preferred candidates have obtained, or have the ability to obtain relevant boating licenses/certifications, to include but not limited to:
    • NASBLA Boat Operator
    • NASBLA Tactical Operator
    • NASBLA Pursuit and Stop
    • USCG Captain's License
    • Any other relevant boater certifications


Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to function in stressful situations and to exercise good judgment under potentially volatile conditions;
  • Must be able to read and understand laws, policies, rules and regulations and procedures, and to follow written and oral directions;
  • Must be highly motivated, self-supervising, productive and able to adopt a flexible work schedule;
  • Must have proven ability to positively interact and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations.
  • May require work outside the regular 40-hour workweek
  • May require overtime work and rotation to other patrol officer positions within the Division.
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
