Seasonal Park Ranger – Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve
This is a temporary position, not to exceed 1,039 hours
, within the Visitor and Resource Protection Division. The expected entry on duty is May 2026
.
Hiring period:
01/05/2026 to 01/20/2026
Salary: $27.34 to $35.54 per hour (plus a 3% cost‑of‑living allowance).

- U.S. Citizen, National or person who owes allegiance to the U.S.
- Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park’s natural and/or cultural resources.
- Prior residence or employment in or near Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve (listed areas:
Alatna, Allakaket, Ambler, Anaktuvuk Pass, Bettles/Evansville, Hughes, Kobuk, Nuiqsut, Shungnak, Wiseman/Coldfoot).
- Provide orientation and informational assistance to visitors.
- Conduct visitor outreach on park facilities, history, and recreational activities.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with park regulations; conduct resource condition assessments.
- Participate in safety initiatives, recommend improvements.
- Maintain campsites, cabins and perform routine back‑country upkeep.
- Operate small watercraft (≤ 26 ft) and government vehicles (≤ 10 000 GVW) for personnel and equipment transport.
- Assist in all‑risk operations (search & rescue, fire response, medical services).
- U.S. citizenship required; background investigation required.
- Selective Service registration for males.
- Competent in drug testing and willing to submit to random drug testing.
- Prepared to carry a firearm for wildlife protection when required.
- Valid driver’s license; submission of motor‑vehicle records required.
- Required certifications: DOI Motorboat Operator Certification Course (if operating watercraft), First Aid and CPR (post‑entry).
- Ability to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Up to ten nights of overnight travel per month may be required.
