Overview
The Department of Revenue (DOR) is seeking an Investigator (to be filled at Revenue Auditor 3, 4, or
5) in the Income Sales and Excise Tax Division, Office of Criminal Investigations, headquartered at our Eau Claire Office. This position is not a sworn law enforcement role.

Pay will depend on applicant experience and qualifications. Starting pay rates are:
Revenue Auditor 3: $35.46 – $40.50 per hour (Pay Schedule 07, Range 03);
Revenue Auditor 4: $40.57 – $48.00 per hour (Pay Schedule 07, Range 02);
Revenue Auditor 5: $48.00 – $53.41 per hour (Pay Schedule 07, Range 02). Licensed certified public accountants may receive an additional $1 per hour.
- Background checks: criminal, fingerprint, and tax compliance checks.
- I‑9 requirements: must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.; DOR does not sponsor visas.
- Probationary period: 24 months.
- Remote work: up to 60%, increasing after probation; primarily in Wisconsin.
- Travel: occasional in‑state travel and infrequent overnight stays.
- Professional education or work experience in accounting or auditing (bachelor’s degree in accounting or auditing, or equivalent).
- Investigation experience (civil, criminal, financial, etc.).
- Experience analyzing financial data (bank records, credit card payments, cash‑app payments, etc.).
- Organizing findings into written reports.
- Providing liaison support between individuals or other departments/agencies.
- Experience reviewing tax returns or financial documents related to subpoenaed records.
- Experience interviewing individuals in civil or criminal related matters.
- Experience interrogating suspects to obtain admissions in criminal matters (Revenue Auditor
4). - Experience presenting evidence or testifying in court (Revenue Auditor
5).
The position conducts intensive field investigations of individuals suspected of committing criminal violations of state tax laws, investigates a suspect’s financial activities, obtains evidence supporting criminal charges, writes detailed reports for criminal complaints, works with prosecutors to obtain convictions, and may present evidence and testify in court, jointly with other law enforcement and state agencies.
