Start Your Journey with British Transport Police and Join a Team Where Your Voice and Values Matter

Are you a current or former Police Officer looking for a new challenge, or considering a return to policing?

British Transport Police (BTP) is recruiting PIP 2 qualified Detective Constables to join our Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in London.

As a Detective Constable with BTP, you will investigate serious and complex crimes across Britain's railway network, protecting passengers, supporting victims, pursuing offenders and helping to keep the country moving safely.

BTP polices and protects over 10,000 miles of track and 3,000 railway stations every day. Our network sits at the heart of Britain's communities, commerce and industry, creating unique investigative opportunities and challenges that you will not find in any other police force.

Our CID officers conduct proactive and reactive investigations into crimes committed across the rail network, ensuring that all available evidence is secured and that investigations are completed to the highest professional standards. Officers act as a point of contact for victims and witnesses, providing support, reassurance and updates throughout the investigative process.

Make a Real Impact

At BTP, we champion modern, people-focused policing. From safeguarding passengers and supporting vulnerable individuals to preventing crime and bringing offenders to justice, no two days are the same.

As a Detective Constable, you could investigate:

  • Robbery
  • County lines activity
  • Sexual offences
  • Safeguarding investigations
  • Organised criminality affecting the rail network

This is a role where your investigative expertise, communication skills, empathy and professionalism are equally valued.

Why Join BTP?

At BTP, we believe our people are our greatest asset. We are committed to creating an environment where officers feel supported, valued and empowered to succeed.

We offer:

  • Flexible working arrangements wherever operationally possible
  • A strong focus on wellbeing, mental health support and inclusive leadership
  • Opportunities to develop specialist skills and experience
  • Diverse career pathways across a national police force
  • Family-friendly policies that recognise life beyond work
  • The opportunity to police a unique and challenging environment

Join a force where your ideas are welcomed, your development is prioritised and your contribution makes a real difference every day.

Pay and Benefits

We recognise the valuable skills and experience that transferees and re-joiners bring to British Transport Police.

Successful candidates will normally be appointed on the pay point equivalent to their current salary, or the salary they were receiving when they left policing, subject to verification and force policy.

In addition to basic salary, officers posted to London will receive:

  • London Weighting Allowance

Full details of salary, allowances and benefits can be found within the Candidate Information Pack.
