Senior Programmer/Analyst

Location:

Lebanon, NH – 1 Medical Center Dr, Lebanon, NH 03766.

Schedule:

Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. Remote work eligibility:
Hybrid.

Position Purpose

This position is as the senior programmer/analyst in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study – a large ongoing maternal/child cohort funded by an NIH program grant until 2030. This study is a large and complex one that obtains a vast array of survey and laboratory data on its participants on an ongoing basis, and this needs exceptional level of expertise and ability.

Description

Design, develop and maintain analysis tools to support the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study as a member of an academic research support team in the Department of Epidemiology. The Children’s Center New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study (NHBCS) is an NIH‑funded Birth Cohort established in 2009 by Dr. Karagas (PI) that is part of the US‑wide Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program.

The ECHO program is in its 2nd cycle and includes a vast and complex array of data collection instruments and tools that require extensive data management.

Key Accountabilities
  • Programming/Scripting
    • Designs, programs, extends, maintains, and evaluates new and existing algorithms and applications to support the objectives of multiple research projects and grants.
    • Determines best available technologies and resources needed to achieve project goals.
    • Oversees and manages all local data requests and queries for the project.
    • Computes projected participant numbers to Milestone Accrual Plan (MAP) for NIH reporting.
    • Conducts required data management to update the ‘core dataset’.
    • May assist with publications in peer‑reviewed scientific journals or conferences.
  • Project Management and Communication
    • Understands project requirements and meets project milestones within time restrictions.
    • Adapts to changing project requirements and makes recommendations for alternative solutions to keep project on track.
    • Collaborates with Dartmouth faculty and staff and maintains dialogue with project stakeholders.
    • Documents project technologies as needed.
    • Effectively communicates with project colleagues.
Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

Master’s degree in public health, statistics, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Master’s degree in public health, statistics, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5‑7 years of professional experience in statistics, data management, epidemiology, or related field.
  • 3‑5 years of demonstrated experience in health services research, claims data, managing complex data systems, and mentoring junior research programmers/analysts.
  • Extensive understanding of rigorous and efficient research design, implementation, and analytic methodologies, particularly around health services research.
  • Advanced SAS knowledge required, including demonstrated experience using SAS functions, developing SAS macros, merging large datasets, and modeling.
  • Advanced knowledge of the R programming language is required, along with a general understanding of object‑oriented computing.
  • Demonstrated claims data expertise with knowledge and understanding of other types of data preferred.
  • Proven ability to effectively mentor analytic activities, interacting with all levels of staff, management, and executive leadership internally and externally.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Other statistical software and/or programming languages (e.g., SPSS, STATA, Python) preferred.
  • Demonstrated data management and statistical methodology expertise.
  • Ability to work independently, taking initiative to advance methods and studies proactively.
  • Proven ability to use sound judgment when interacting with internal and external collaborators.

  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral & written communication skills.
