Hours
:
Monday through Friday, 6:30am to 2:30pm with required call; candidate must live within 30 minutes of the hospital for call purposes. Weekday call is 14:30-06:00 the following morning;
Weekend call is 24 hours Saturday and Sunday.
Sign-on Bonus: $15,000 for qualified candidates.
Department OverviewWe are made up of two operating rooms and one hybrid OR. The Surgical Tech will work with a multi-disciplinary team of cardio-thoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiovascular technologists, physician assistants, and registered nurses. The Cardiothoracic Operating Room (CTOR) is part of the Surgical Services department at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg, Virginia. There are 14 ORs, 2 minor surgery rooms, 6 procedure rooms, and 2 C-section suites.
There are 2 dedicated CTORs, one Hybrid OR, and one Robotic OR for CTS cases.
- Assist cardiovascular surgeons during open-heart, vascular, and thoracic procedures as the primary scrub technician.
- Prepare the operating room, organize surgical instruments and supplies, and maintain a sterile environment.
- Anticipate surgeon needs and provide intraoperative support to optimize surgical outcomes and patient safety.
- Pass instruments, sutures, grafts, and other sterile supplies; ensure proper sterilization and functioning of instruments.
- Maintain sterile technique and infection control standards; collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and nursing staff.
- Handle specimens, document as required, and perform accurate counts with the circulator.
- Participate in preoperative briefings and postoperative debriefings to support surgical quality improvement.
- Assist with room turnover and cleaning/organization of the department.
- Remain calm and focused under pressure; maintain attention to detail and safety protocols.
- Review surgeons preferences prior to each procedure; check supplies and equipment; assist with selection and opening of sterile supplies.
- Ensure a safe environment regarding patient safety, fire prevention, and infection control; maintain highest sterile field organization.
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Trade school graduate preferred
- NBSTSA certification and Surgical Technologist licensure required if licensure is required in the state of practice; otherwise NBSTSA certification is required
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- 1 year of experience in cardio or thoracic surgery required
- In-depth knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, instrumentation, and procedures
- Ability to work independently on all CVOR cases, including TAVR and combined vascular cases
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; ability to follow surgeons preferences;
- Ability to work with call requirements for cardiac surgery cases
