General Statement Of Responsibilities

The Regional Mobile Crisis Response Peer Recovery Specialist provides co-response peer support during mobile crisis responses to people in crisis in their homes and other community settings within the catchment area listed above and the surrounding localities. They respond with a QMHP or LMHP responder to help with assessing crisis situations and providing de-escalation and support for the consumer in crisis.

At times, they may provide telehealth in support of other teams in the region. The Peer Recovery Specialist will have ongoing support and clinical guidance from their supervisor. This position serves the assigned catchment area and will require the Peer Recovery Specialist to work from home, in the field, and at CSB offices to meet the needs of the Region.

Major

Duties
  • Provide immediate crisis supports to homes, and communities within assigned catchment area across mental health, substance use, and intellectual/developmental disability issues.
  • Responds between 1-2 hours to crisis episodes, based on catchment area requirements.
  • Assist team members in the field by implementing a range of support services designed to educate, support and empower persons with mental illness and their families/care givers, using a recovery-based model.
  • Link individuals with agency and community resources to promote mental health wellness, recovery and self-empowerment.
  • Must have a willingness to share personal story connected to mental health/substance abuse recovery.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with Regional Mobile Crisis team members, Program Manager, and Director.
  • Collaborate with Region 1 CSBs, community partners/stakeholders, and parties involved in the consumer’s treatment (including private providers, law enforcement, Crisis programs, Emergency services, Department of Social Services (DSS)).
  • Suggest referrals to appropriate community services.
  • Document all services and results in the consumer’s electronic health record by established deadlines.
  • Attend required meetings and participate in trainings as assigned.
  • Participate in clinical and administrative supervision as determined by the Regional Mobile Crisis Program Manager.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Education:

The incumbent must have a high school diploma and the skills and competence to establish supportive trusting relationships with persons.

Experience

Work experience or life experience with services for mental illnesses or with individuals with similar human-services needs and a strong commitment and desire to help others move towards recovery from the impact of a psychiatric emergency.

Certification/License
  • Certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist in Virginia is preferred.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License plus an acceptable driving record as issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles are required. For business use of a personal car, a certificate of valid personal automobile insurance must be provided.
Knowledge Of
  • Characteristics of severe mental illness and mental illness with chemical abuse.
  • Concepts and practices of recovery from illness and its impact on daily life.
  • Specific tools for fostering recovery interest and achievement, including WRAP; crisis recognition, prevention techniques, and management.
  • Procedures for preventing, diffusing and managing aggression; emergency procedures; first aid; CPR; business arithmetic; and computer skills.
Skills In
  • Engagement of consumers in a recovery process.
  • Communicating in a professional manner with a variety of individuals, fostering a sense of trust in others, exhibiting a calm and supportive presence when in the consumer’s home and/or community setting.
Abilities To
  • Work collegially with other staff.
  • Problem-solve for self and for consumers.
  • Act positively and constructively in all interactions with service recipients and their friends and families.
  • Make sound and safe decisions as regards behavior management, health needs, emergencies.
