An Ophthalmic Technician assists an ophthalmologist in providing excellent patient care throughout the visit, handling a range of duties while using equipment to perform the initial testing required to prepare a patient for an exam with an ophthalmologist.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide exceptional customer service at every patient encounter (in person or via phone)
- Display a professional attitude, greet patients promptly with a smile, and thank them upon departure
- Practice urgency at all times with patient time, doctor's time, and schedule
- Comply with all company policies and procedures, including HIPAA
- Verify patient information by interviewing patients
- Record medical history, current medications, and confirm purpose of visit
- Enter all data into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR)
- Check eye condition by observing pupils, muscles, visual acuity, and extraocular movements
- Perform diagnostic tests: dilation, refraction, pressure measurement, visual fields, OCT, GDX, IOL Master, autorefractor, and topography
- Demonstrate working knowledge of eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and ocular medications
- Perform general office duties and cleaning as assigned by manager
- Desire to gain industry knowledge and training

- Interacts with employees of all levels in a courteous, professional manner at all times
- Commitment to work over 40 hours to meet business needs
- Reliable transportation to allow travel to multiple work locations with minimal notice
- High school diploma or GED required
- One year of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification is preferred but not required
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Requires frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%) with regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%)
- Must lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs
- Requires strong fine motor skills and total use of hands for writing/typing and technology
- Visual and auditory acuity, including color, depth, peripheral vision, and focus adjustment, required 100% of the time
- Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary
