Genomic Sequencing Technologist (Laboratory Technologist II)

This position is in the Public Health Laboratory's Virology and Serology Division at 8231 Parklane Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.

Perform Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) testing on microbial isolates (including but not limited to Salmonella, CRE, STEC, Campylobacter, Vibrio, and Listeria). Operate and maintain equipment, and keep up-to-date records of maintenance and verification checks.

Perform molecular testing for Norovirus, including conventional PCR, sample purification, and sequencing analysis. Maintain equipment and records of maintenance and verification checks.

Meet time and volume requirements for WGS and Norovirus testing as directed by grants.

Perform Next-Generation Sequencing on SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, and other viral and bacterial pathogens as protocols are introduced.

Maintain CDC WGS and Norovirus sequencing certifications through Pulse Net and Calic Net. Perform quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) activities, keeping records up-to-date for compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.

Communicate technical information effectively to the SC DPH, epidemiological partners, CDC, and FDA, both verbally and in writing.

Keep records of all supplies and reagents used for testing, maintaining adequate stock levels at all times.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Minimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree in a related medical or scientific discipline; or an associate degree or equivalent training with journey-level work experience in a related field. Recognized institutions by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation are required.

Agency Additional Requirements: Two (2) years of lab experience if the highest education level is an associate's degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications such as Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Medical Technologist (MT) are a plus. Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification is beneficial but not required.

Additional Comments

Driving Record: If operating a vehicle is required, a certified 10-year driving record will be requested during final stages of selection.
