Job Summary
The student assistant will support the MICR 440 undergraduate microbiology laboratory during scheduled lab sessions (Wednesdays, 1:00-4:45 p.m.). Duties include remaining in the laboratory prep room to provide instructional support, supplying the class with additional reagents, glassware, and materials as needed, and ensuring familiarity with weekly prep lists and material locations. The assistant may be required to run errands to other laboratories (e.g., chemistry lab) to obtain additional chemicals or supplies if required and assist the instructor with setting up laboratory equipment.
This position supports the smooth operation and safety of the MICR 440 laboratory course. Upon hire, the student assistant must complete general laboratory safety training and BLS 2 training before beginning work in the laboratory.
- Be a current undergraduate student at the University of Michigan-Dearborn
- Successful completion of, or current enrollment in, upper-level microbiology laboratory coursework (e.g., MICR 440 or equivalent)
- Basic laboratory skills, including proper handling of reagents, glassware, and laboratory equipment
- Ability to follow written protocols and weekly preparation lists accurately
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a laboratory setting
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to communicate effectively with the instructor and laboratory staff
Prior experience working in a teaching or research laboratory; familiarity with basic microbiology laboratory techniques and safety practices; dependability and punctuality during scheduled laboratory hours.
