Job Summary
The Coding Audit Educator is responsible for auditing inpatient and outpatient medical records at UTSW for coding and documentation accuracy. Audits will adhere to official coding guidelines and organizational, departmental, and regulatory requirements. The role serves as a subject‑matter expert and provides educational feedback to coding staff and teams.

- Required – Experience 3‑5 years of acute hospital‑based coding experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Required – Licenses / Certifications RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, CCDS, or COC (excluding AAPC Apprentice).
- Preferred – Education Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field.
- Preferred – Experience Remote work experience.
- Preferred – Certification AHIMA‑Approved I10 Trainer Certification.
- Audit inpatient and/or outpatient accounts for coding and documentation accuracy.
- Provide educational feedback to individuals and teams.
- Research and prepare educational tutorials; submit to AHIMA for CEU approval.
- Audit records for diagnoses, DRG, reason for visit, procedures, and secondary diagnoses with appropriate specificity and CC/MCCs.
- Audit abstracting for required data elements (discharge disposition, destination, procedure dates, physicians, etc.).
- Identify when physician query is needed for clarification.
- Recognize missing or incomplete documentation and recommend appropriate actions.
- Support UTSW quality standards and mentor/train on service lines as requested.
- Maintain expert knowledge of coding guidelines and practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
