Specialist Clinical Scientist Nuclear Medicine

The University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust wishes to appoint a highly motivated Specialist Clinical Scientist within Nuclear Medicine based at Northampton General Hospital. The successful applicant will be a registered Clinical Scientist and MPE with substantial experience across all areas of Nuclear Medicine.

The UHN Nuclear Medicine service is provided at Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital, covering a wide range of diagnostic tests and therapeutic studies. The service includes four gamma cameras (one dedicated cardiac, one standard and two with CT capability) and an onsite radiopharmacy  molecular radiotherapy service includes iodine ablation therapy, thyrotoxicosis therapy and Xofigo. PET‑CT is provided by Alliance Medical Ltd with UHL providing RPA, RWA and MPE services.

You will receive full support and access to the Nuclear Medicine team at UHL, including the Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics, Specialist Clinical Scientists and Clinical Scientists. Flexibility is provided for time spent in UHL for knowledge expansion and management support, including meetings and CPD, which may involve onsite visits and remote working.

Responsibilities
  • Lead at least one specialist area (diagnostic nuclear medicine, unsealed source therapy or PET‑CT).
  • Provide specialist scientific support and advice to consultants and technical staff on highly complex issues and interpretation of guidance relating to Nuclear Medicine.
  • Engage in optimisation of clinical protocols and development of translational techniques and procedures in conjunction with clinical colleagues.
  • Undertake specific research and development activities, keeping abreast of new developments in the field.
  • Work unsupervised, supervise junior staff and provide training.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team of clinical scientists, technologists, medical, nursing and clerical staff.
  • Measure and calculate radiation doses to patients, staff and others from Nuclear Medicine procedures.
  • Ensure safety of patients, staff and public during and after therapies with respect to radiation exposure and contamination.
  • Ensure Nuclear Medicine procedures are performed correctly and equipment operates safely and accurately.
  • Investigate complex faults in equipment, evaluate, select, procure, install and accept new equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation relating to radioactive materials and Radiopharmacy operation.
  • Provide advice and protocols for performing and analysing patient procedures.
  • Lead research and clinical trials while ensuring safety and legal compliance.
Training & Qualifications
  • Good Hons degree in physics or related subject.
  • MSc in a relevant subject or equivalent.
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
  • Evidence of post‑qualification specialist training (CPD).
  • Enroment on a recognised CPD scheme.
  • Corporate Member of IPEM.
  • Able to act as an RPA.
  • Able to act as an RWA.
Experience
  • Registered as a Medical Physics Expert with post‑registration experience.
  • Expert knowledge in the physics of Nuclear Medicine.
  • Expert theoretical and practical knowledge of patient and staff risks arising from clinical failures and staff errors.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Access and other office applications for document and spreadsheet preparation.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, develop and deliver advice and projects with a record of achievements evidenced by reports and publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Experience as an MPE in PET‑CT.
  • Experience with SPECT‑CT – attenuation scanning and full diagnostic studies.
Communication and Relationship Skills
  • Experience of direct patient and general public contact.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Able to communicate highly complex information at postgraduate level to clinical and Medical Physics staff of all levels and to other professional groups.
  • Advanced negotiation skills with staff groups across the Trust.
  • Able to present scientific papers at national and international conferences.
  • Able to train groups of other professional staff.
  • Able to deliver teaching and training on highly complex subjects.
