What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
  • Review clinical documentation during patient admissions to identify opportunities for improvement and communicate findings to physicians
  • Conduct follow-up reviews to ensure accurate clinical documentation is recorded in patient charts
  • Perform medical record reviews to facilitate improvement in documentation quality and ensure compliance with coding and reimbursement standards
  • Submit electronic queries to clinicians for complete and accurate records
  • Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly metrics and participate in required meetings and training sessions
What is Required (Qualifications):
  • Associate's degree in nursing, completed degree from an accredited medical school, or Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related program
  • Certification as a Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) or Clinical Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) required within six months of hire
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Clinical Documentation Specialist (CDS) in an acute care setting
  • Minimum of five years of healthcare experience
  • Strong understanding of disease processes and clinical documentation requirements
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Current active coding credential from AHIMA or AAPC, such as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Prior experience as a CDI/Coding auditor
  • Experience in inpatient case management or utilization review
