Project Description

Association Between Healthcare Access and Neighborhood Factors on Childhood Asthma Prevalence in the United States

This project examines the association between healthcare access and neighborhood factors and childhood asthma. Using nationally representative survey data, this study aims to assess how barriers to healthcare access interact with neighborhood conditions to influence asthma prevalence among children. By identifying populations and communities at elevated risk, this research seeks to inform public health surveillance, health equity‑focused interventions, and policy strategies aimed at reducing the burden of childhood asthma and addressing structural determinants of respiratory health.

Role Description

Melaram Lab is seeking a Volunteer Population Health Disparities Analyst for a fully remote position to support this project. The volunteer will assist with data integration and epidemiologic analysis focused on social determinants of health and childhood asthma. Responsibilities include working with population‑level data, contributing to statistical analyses, and assisting with interpretation and reporting of findings. Collaboration with an interdisciplinary research team and participation in virtual meetings will be expected.

This role is well suited for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, or early‑career professionals seeking applied experience in population health epidemiology and asthma disparities research. Exceptional undergraduate students may also be considered. There is potential for transition to a part‑time paid role
, contingent on project needs and funding availability.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Training in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sociology, or a related field
  • Experience with data analysis and epidemiologic methods
  • Knowledge of asthma disparities
  • Strong analytical, research, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a remote research setting
