Shift

Seven 12-hour shifts per pay period from 6pm to 6am CST. 8 weekend shifts per 8-week schedule and 5 holidays per year.

Compensation

$34.13 – $42.64 hourly

Position Summary

The Organ Utilization Specialist directs the allocation of organs from organ donors to potential transplant centers and coordinates import organ offers on behalf of transplant centers. The ideal OUS candidate will possess knowledge related to United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) regulations, donor evaluation and management, authorization, and organ allocation for transplant and research/education. The OUS effectively identifies and communicates vital clinical information and serves as the primary point of contact during the organ import and organ allocation processes.

Our primary focus is to provide a consistent, accurate, and timely service that enables our counterparts to make decisions that yield optimal transplant results. Successful Organ Utilization Specialists thrive in a fast-paced dynamic environment while exhibiting Iowa Donor Network’s core values.

Essential Functions and Performance Responsibilities
  • Precisely communicate applicable donor information to members of the recipient care team and/or external partners to minimize organ cold ischemia time and maximize organ placement.
  • Document clinical and logistical information in iTransplant system accurately and promptly.
  • Analyze donor charts and review all necessary clinical/social information, ensuring accuracy to generate match runs in UNET.
  • Consult with the OUS Manager, OUS Team Lead, and/or ORS to identify case-specific barriers to organ utilization to minimize risk of organ discard and maximize transplantation opportunities.
  • Manage import organ referrals for designated transplant hospitals and decipher donor clinical data to accept or decline organ offers.
  • Participate actively in departmental meetings, continuing education opportunities, quality assurance initiatives, and required training.
  • Identify and report adverse events and highlight process improvement opportunities focused on organ utilization and patient safety.
  • Ensure compliance with current federal, state, and local laws and regulations including CMS, UNOS, and Iowa Donor Network’s policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive, protected, and confidential information.
