Position: Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (Spanish English Fluency Required)

This position requires the ability to speak, text and write fluently in Spanish and English.

Position Summary

The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program provides education and support about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and how to prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns. The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is responsible for the performance of support activities in the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program through telephone, texting, support groups, and social media.

Essential Job Functions
  • Promote breastfeeding as the optimal source of infant nutrition and counsel mothers using current evidence-based practices with breastfeeding complications and concerns.
  • Facilitate and present at breastfeeding support groups/education sessions in person and via social media.
  • Perform independent case management of assigned breastfeeding program participants using participant-centered education model. Includes rotation of on system check once every 5-7 weeks.
  • Ensure proper and timely reporting/documentation for all assigned program participants is completed and accurate according to program guidelines. Refer appropriately when outside scope of practice.
  • Utilize confidentiality best practice according to program guidelines.
  • Participate in outreach events and in person office hours as needed.
  • Works closely with fellow peers and WIC staff to promote and support breastfeeding within the community.
  • Performs other functions as required to fulfill the expectations of the position and the goals and objectives of assigned program/projects and the agency.
  • Participate in department and community emergency response training and drills consistent with job classification in support of public health emergency and disaster preparedness and use of incident command structure.
  • Assists in the training of new employees to the area.
  • Responds to public health emergencies, as needed, and directed, aside from typical duties and schedule for the position.
  • Contributes to developing and implementation of goals of the agency strategic, performance management, workforce development and quality improvement plans.
Knowledge | Skills | Abilities
  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills especially when dealing with difficult situations related to breastfeeding. Maintains enthusiasm about breastfeeding and has a positive attitude when interacting with participants and coworkers.
  • Ability to engage with and work with other personnel and teams especially through electronic communication (cell phone, e-mail, etc.).
  • Ability to work with current computer software programs with general skill and competence (including keyboarding).
  • Ability to work with new and emerging texting technology to support program functions/activities.
  • Well organized, efficient, and self-motivated to manage multiple responsibilities while working in office or remote. Showcases flexibility and teamwork.
  • Take personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service in order to promote and maintain a positive Public Health image, constructive working environment, and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.
Qualifications | Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must have breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six months (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
  • Required to work 12-17 hours per week.
  • Fluency in writing, texting and speaking Spanish and English.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado photo identification card and be able to provide personal transportation for work-related purposes.
  • Must obtain annual flu vaccination and any job specific immunizations. May be required to submit to a TB test.
Work Environment | Physical Demands

Work is typically from at home setting, at a computer off and on throughout the workday. Required to attend meetings at the Health Department frequently. The 12-17 work hours may be completed between 8 am and 10 pm, seven days a week. Schedule is flexible based on program needs. Attendance at multiple in person department and programmatic meetings required.

Work may require some physical exertion such as, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities. May be required to lift and carry up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis, climb stair, bend, reach, grasp and turn objects; and use fingers to perform routine office procedures, operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak fluently and to use normal or aided vision and hearing.
