Job DescriptionThe Occupational Health and Safety Specialist provides workplace health and safety services and guidance to support a safe University workplace and adherence to state and federal occupational safety and health standards. The position develops and promotes occupational health and safety programs and prepares and conducts related safety trainings. This position independently conducts hazard assessments, performs sampling, recommends hazard controls and personal protective equipment, and interacts with students, faculty, and staff to guide, teach, and implement best safety and compliance practices.
The position also maintains EHSS’s health and safety instrumentation and equipment and investigates and responds to health and safety inquiries and incidents.
- Bachelor of Science degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety, or related science.
- 3+ years of health and safety and/or industrial hygiene experience preferably in a complex organization or higher education setting.
- Familiarity with environmental, health and safety sampling and monitoring equipment.
- Must establish principal residence within approximately 30 minutes driving distance from Syracuse University to support on-site responsibilities and emergency response.
- Broad familiarity with industrial hygiene and occupational safety and health related topics, practices, regulations, standards.
- Experience in performing occupational health and safety related monitoring, sampling and exposure evaluations.
- Ability to research and review regulatory information and standards to determine appropriate actions, create summary reports, and develop new or improve existing University programs, policies and procedures.
- Willingness to support off hours training, assessments and health and safety response actions.
- Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
- Skilled in developing clear and concise technical reports and training materials.
- Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite and relevant applications.
- Strong public speaking skills and demonstrated experience in providing health and safety training.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse campus population.
- Willingness to work collaboratively in support of all areas of the EHSS Department.
- Excellent organization and time management skills.
- Valid NYS Driver’s license and a driving record which meets University requirements.
- Current HAZWOPER certification preferred.
- Manages, supports, maintains, and develops workplace health and safety programs administered by EHSS including chemical hazard communication, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, silica safety, lead safety, blood borne pathogens and other occupational health and safety related programs.
