Job summary

We are delighted to offer this full‑time permanent position to work into the adult Diabetes and Gastroenterology Psychology teams. The successful candidate will join a rapidly expanding Clinical Health Psychology Department within Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT).

This post is ideally suited to a candidate wanting to develop their experience working in physical health with the support of experienced and enthusiastic clinical psychologists. An interest in working with patients with physical health difficulties is essential however we appreciate that these are specialist areas in which candidates may not have experience. Most importantly we require a willingness and enthusiasm to learn condition‑specific information and embed within the MDTs.

Supervision will be by the Consultant Clinical Psychologist who leads both services.

The adult Diabetes and Gastroenterology Psychology services started in 2022 and are now well established, with Clinical Health Psychology well used and appreciated by the MDTs.

Main duties of the job

This post is specifically working into the diabetes and gastroenterology teams to deliver exceptional psychological care to patients. The successful candidate will be an integral part of these multidisciplinary teams, who greatly value the input of Clinical Health Psychology.

The role will involve providing psychological services and clinical expertise to the diabetes and gastroenterology caseload, including working with patients and their families and carers. The successful candidate will work closely with specialist nurses and medical staff including provision of supervision, teaching, training, and consultation to the team. Service‑evaluation and audit will also be an important and valued element of the role.

Job responsibilities
  • Provide specialist clinical psychology assessment, intervention, teaching and training to adult in‑ and out‑patients and services working with patients and/or carers with a range of physical health conditions.
  • Undertake a range of evidence‑based psychological interventions, drawing on a range of psychological models and employing a range of modalities (individual and family) adapted and tailored to the needs of the individual and the context and the ongoing evaluation of the outcomes of the intervention.
  • Formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of the patient’s condition, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of their difficulties, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
  • Establish rapport and build effective working relationships with service users and all those involved in their psychological, emotional and behavioural well‑being.
  • Evaluate and make specialist decisions about psychological treatment options considering both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual and/or family.
  • Ensure accurate clinical and audit records are maintained and keep up to date knowledge of national and local policies.
