Student Counsellors

  • Job Type: Full-time, Temporary (Start ASAP until 15/05/2026)
  • Location: Remote (Online-based)
  • Salary: £21.93 per hour
  • Hours: 35 hours per week

We are seeking two Student Counsellors to join an Education and Student Services team. These roles are crucial in providing support and guidance to students, ensuring their well-being during their academic journey. The positions are remote, offering counselling services online, and are set to cover absence within the team.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Provide confidential and empathetic support to students through online counselling sessions.
  • Assess the needs of students and develop appropriate support plans.
  • Offer crisis intervention and manage emergency situations effectively.
  • Maintain accurate records of all counselling sessions and follow up on cases as necessary.
  • Collaborate with other service providers and staff within the education and student services to coordinate care for students.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and contribute to the development of the service.

Required Skills &

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • A minimum level 4 diploma lasting 2 years, with total training of 400 hours, and an average of 1.5 hours supervision per month, including personal therapy during the course.
  • Minimum of 100 client hours post-qualified.
  • Registration equivalent to one of the following: ACC, BACP, HGI, HCPC, NCS, or UKCP Trainee Membership.
  • Experience of counselling a diverse range of young people, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, applying short-term models of counselling.
  • Experience of facilitating therapy groups.
  • Experience of collaborative multi-disciplinary working.
  • Knowledge and experience of crisis management.
  • Knowledge of the needs of students with severe and enduring mental health conditions and associated counselling and referral issues.
  • Ability to communicate assessment, liaison, and referral information clearly and succinctly, verbally and in writing, to other support services and to students.
  • Ability to contain challenging client material, to seek support and consult appropriately.
  • IT literacy (such as Microsoft Office) with a willingness and facility for learning new systems.
  • Planning, organisational, and administrative skills.
  • A clear commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusivity towards clients and fellow staff.
  • Respect for a wide range of psychological theoretical approaches and the integration of current ideas and research outcomes.
  • An ability to manage change within the service.
