About the Job

  • Based in County Hall, Taunton with some remote working possible and flexible working arrangements to be discussed on a case‑by‑case basis.
  • 30 days annual leave (pro rata for part‑time hours).
  • This role comes with continuing professional development opportunities, as well as significant exposure to learning across the public health team role.
  • 3 years fixed term post until 31st March 2029.
  • Regretfully, we are unable to offer sponsorship for this role. We are only able to proceed with candidates who already have the right to work in the UK without the need for visa sponsorship.
What will I be doing?

We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. Your day‑to‑day work will involve:

  • Leading the development, coordination and delivery of Somerset Strategic Drugs and Alcohol Partnership.
  • Provide expert leadership to guide multi‑agency collaboration, influence policy and guide strategy development and implementation in drugs and alcohol.
  • Work closely with partners across the county, including across Somerset Council departments; police; probation, the NHS, Department of Work and Pensions; the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise sector and others.
  • Lead the development of a workstream to better understand and prevent drug and alcohol related deaths and harm in Somerset.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you have:

  • A degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant field.
  • Strong understanding of national and local substance misuse policy, strategy and implementation.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of multi‑agency partnership systems, including how public health, local authorities, NHS bodies and policing structures collaborate to reduce substance‑related harm.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in public health or similar field.
