Education Mental Health Practitioner

We are looking for a qualified Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in an evolving service, based in schools, working alongside teaching staff to support the early identification of mental health and promote wellbeing for staff and young people.

Delivering evidence-based, early intervention for children and young people in education settings with mild to moderate mental health problems, working with a range of professionals to direct best practice, in a holistic, and child centre way.

Helping children and young people within these setting to deliver early intervention to prevent onset of more complex mental health needs.

Supporting and facilitating staff in education settings to identify mental health and wellbeing needs, promoting a Whole School Approach and embedding a positive ethos and attitude to mental health and wellbeing.

A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Main duties of the job

This is an opportunity to be involved in the expanding MHST service, as a joint initiative between health and education. The Mental Health Support Team (MHST) is a new service available in certain Nottinghamshire schools. We have been a trailblazer site for the project and were the first site nationally to go live in December 2019.

Please note that the above are office bases only, the team operate within a hybrid model with some remote work as well as working in schools.

You must be a qualified Education Mental Health Practitioner and have obtained the relevant EMHP / CWP Post Graduate Diploma qualification following the completion of a CYP IAPT approved training in Evidence-Based Psychological Treatment for Children and Young People (C&Y IAPT) and be accredited and registered with BABCP or BPS.

A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 per year applies.

Job responsibilities
  • Assess and deliver outcome focused, evidence-based interventions (either directly or using a remote approach, individual or group) in educational settings for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties, working at all times in collaboration with and giving respect to the education function of the setting in which you are deployed.
  • Work in partnership to support children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties and their parents/carers, families and educators in the self-management of presenting difficulties.
  • Work in effective, evidence-based partnership with children, young people, their families and their educators in the development of plans for the intervention and agreed outcomes.
  • Support and empower children, young people, their parents/carers and families and their educators to make informed choices about the interventions being offered.
  • Operate at all times from an inclusive values base, which recognises and respects diversity.
  • Accept referrals according to agreed local and national protocols.
  • Undertake and record accurate assessments of risk and operate clear risk management processes in line with locally agreed procedures including the safeguarding protocols of the educational setting and Local Safeguarding Board guidance.
  • Adhere to all regulations, processes and procedures within the educational service to which you are attached within the educational setting where you are working including (but not limited to) HR policies, training requirements, referral protocols, and emergency procedures. Signpost referrals of children with more complex needs to a locally identified appropriate relevant service.
  • Through case management, supervision and any other relevant local pathway, elevate cases where the level of need or risk is beyond the scope of your practice.
  • Provide a range of information and support for evidence based psychological treatments, primarily guided self-help.
  • Practice, evidence and demonstrate an ability to manage one's own caseload in conjunction with the requirements of the team.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary and multi-agency meetings relating to referrals or children and young people in treatment, where appropriate.
