The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of Clinical Coding services within the Trust including those undertaken in conjunction with clinical staff. The post holder will be required to deliver coding within the overall coding cycle and represent the coding team by working with CBU service teams and other colleagues. This will include clinical coding advice guidance and interpretation, and review audit and validation of records on a regular basis.
Mainduties of the job
- Participate in the Internal Clinical Coding Validation Programme within the Trust, including regular meetings with clinical teams to explore ways to improve coded data and to analyse coded data to improve quality.
- As an ACC qualified professional, communicate clearly and confidently, offer advice and solutions, demonstrate empathy, leadership, attention to detail, reliability and business acumen related to Clinical Coding.
- Monitor data quality and clinical coding standards in line with local and national guidelines. Report any complex coding issues for verification and/or resolution with NHS Digital and follow up all responses with relevant staff.
- Demonstrate effective organisational and time management skills, work independently and as part of a team, work flexibly across specialties, be highly motivated and lead by example, motivating other team members.

- Monitor data quality and clinical coding standards, report complex coding issues, and follow up with relevant staff.
- Be responsible for uncoded finished consultant episodes for all specialties and delegate workload to meet coding targets. Work autonomously without direct instruction when self‑allocating work and achieving daily coding targets. Assist the Clinical Coding Manager in achieving month‑end coding completion targets.
- Plan and prioritise own workload daily.
- Provide mentorship to more junior staff when required.
- Be responsible for abstracting and analysing complicated patient clinical records applying coding rules and conventions, using judgement to translate cases. Input data onto the Clinical Information System (Expanse) for all inpatient and day case episodes within agreed timescales.
- Routinely extract pathology, histology, radiology information from IT systems to enhance accuracy of coded data.
- Work on own initiative in collecting information by whatever means required, including entering very specific areas such as ITU, HDU wards, exercising diplomacy and confidentiality.
- GCSEs (A‑C) or equivalent or work based experience
- Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ)
- Accredited Clinical Coding Auditor Qualification
- EDCL
