We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.
We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!
Your role :You will lead developments to create the conditions for change in relation to Healthy Places across Wigan borough. You will develop a whole system approach to healthy places, aligning council plans and services with those in the wider public sector, voluntary and business sectors.
A key aspect will be to engage with the voluntary sector and the public to understand local needs and insights in relation to the local place. Key outcomes will include health impact in planning decisions, equitable access to green and blue spaces, licensing and food growing, health inequalities in regeneration projects and reducing barriers to active travel.
About you:Based within the Public Health Team, you will collaborate with and work across several council departments and teams including planning, regeneration, major projects, highways, regulatory services, housing, green spaces/food, play and active travel.
You will have experience in public health programme management, ideally in relation to place or wider determinants. Strong partnership skills are essential, alongside the ability to influence across complex systems. You will be confident using data to identify priorities and areas to drive change and you will have excellent communication skills to engage stakeholders. Experience working in a council public health team or related role is essential.
Current registration as a Public Health Practitioner is desirable although support will be given to candidates without full registration. Knowledge of national strategies and plans to reduce health inequalities relating to place is desirable.
Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.
The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.
The Public Health Team is passionate about improving health and wellbeing and addressing health inequalities in Wigan borough. We play a key role in informing and influencing decision-making across the council in relation to the wider determinants of health.
We place a strong emphasis on research and evaluating the impact of commissioned services and investment. We are also focussed on understanding population insights and lived experience to inform priorities.
We are committed to developing a skilled workforce. You will receive a comprehensive induction, ongoing training and opportunities for professional development to help you deliver high-quality outcomes and achieve your full potential.
Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community. We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits to find out more about working for Team Wigan.
