The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Optometrist to join the Ophthalmology Medical Retina Team within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. This unique permanent part‑time role allows you to be part of an established team of approximately 40 Optometrists working across eight Ophthalmology departments throughout Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

You will primarily work within the Medical Retina service managing patients with diabetes, while also supporting the development of junior colleagues through clinical supervision and appraisal. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Optometrist looking to further their career within the Hospital Eye Service.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
  • This is a permanent post working part‑time hours (3.75).
  • Hours will be from 09:00 to 12:45.
  • Post is based at Gartnavel General Hospital; your clinic will be a Thursday morning at New Victoria Hospital. Other sites may be required as the role/service develops.
  • Salary is pro‑rata for part‑time hours.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist assessment and management of patients with diabetes within the Hospital Eye Service.
  • Complete Turas appraisals for junior staff and provide clinical supervision to Pre‑Registration Optometrists and Healthcare Support Workers.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the service and may rotate into other core Optometry clinics and extended Ophthalmology roles as they become available.
  • Receive comprehensive training to support continued professional development.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree in Optometry.
  • Current registration with the General Optical Council (GOC).
  • Proven clinical experience in the management of patients with diabetes (essential).
  • Postgraduate qualification in diabetes, or equivalent clinical experience, is desirable.
  • Experience working within a Hospital Eye Service is desirable.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
  • Experience supervising or supporting junior staff is desirable.
  • Willingness to travel across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde sites as required.
