The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting a Human Resources Generalist in Helena. The HR Generalist partners with leadership and manages the day-to‑day operations of human resources for an assigned program area, ensuring consistency and compliance with federal, state, and collective bargaining contracts. This position consults, advises, and partners with management on personnel issues, contract interpretation, performance management, recruitment and selection, discipline, drug testing, workforce development, employee relations, training, and workers’ compensation and safety.
The HR Generalist serves as the subject‑matter expert and primary resource for the division(s) or district and reports to the Human Resources Manager. The position does not supervise others and is part of a career ladder with advancement opportunities.
• Partner with leadership to manage daily HR operations.
• Apply HR policies, procedures, and programs consistently.
• Advise management on personnel issues, contract interpretation, and performance management.
• Handle recruitment, selection, discipline, drug testing, workforce development, employee relations, training, workers’ compensation, and safety.
• Serve as the subject‑matter expert for HR matters within the division(s) or district.
- Associate’s Degree in human resources, business, public administration, or a closely related field.
- One (1) year of human resources related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Advanced knowledge of HR management, public administration, state and federal employment laws, labor relations, drug testing, and contract negotiation techniques.
- Understanding of business and management principles related to strategic planning, leadership, and people/resource coordination.
- Knowledge of performance management, learning and motivation, assessment, customer service principles, public relations, and business communications.
- Culture of public service and work/life balance.
