Position: Employee Relations Consultant - (Fixed Term Contract)

Employee Relations Consultant / People Matters. (Fixed Term Contract - 12 Months)

Do you bring hands-on experience in Employee Relations within a professional services or corporate environment? Are you passionate about delivering commercially focused advice and support across a wide range of cases? If so, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking for an experienced Employee Relations Consultant to join our team in this 12 month FTC. In this role, you’ll handle a diverse caseload including grievances, disciplinaries, performance and capability matters, absence and wellbeing support, contract queries, and policy reviews.

This is a hybrid role offering flexibility to suit your working style. It can be fully virtual/home-based, with expectations to attend the office once a quarter‑up to four times per year. Alternatively, if you prefer a hybrid working pattern, we’d be delighted to welcome applicants based near our offices in St Albans or Epsom.

What the day will look like

As an Employee Relations Consultant/ People Matters Consultant you will be encouraged to:

  • Provide high quality ER advice to business managers and People Partners / HRBP’s on a day to day basis and partner effectively across teams and functions to deliver best practice results
  • Use coaching and influencing skills to ensure the right outcome is achieved in each case, managing risk whilst maximising business results
  • Advise the business in the understanding, ownership and application of all aspects of employment legislation, procedural compliance and best practice
  • Accurately interpret changes in legislation and codes of practice to ensure the business follows best practice and operates within the parameters of employment law and regulatory requirements
  • Develop effective and credible relationships with colleagues and clients to promote good employee relations across the business
  • Deliver an effective internal ER consultancy, remaining focused on adding value to the business and maximising the effectiveness of Aon colleagues
  • Assist in the development of a proactive ER agenda, project work, knowledge sharing and professional development activities and day to day tasks
  • Support change management programmes including employee consultation
  • Responsibility for working in accordance with the Aon UK Limited Risk Management Framework, and compliance with the Aon UK Limited policies, including participation in the management of risks (including completion of mandatory training) that may adversely affect the business, interests or reputation of any Group Company.

Here at Aon, you will be part of the wider People Organisation. Within the PO, we have our Centres of Excellence, including our Employee Relations team, known internally as People Matters. This is a well‑connected group of professional employment law and relations consultants, as well as qualified lawyers.

As a part of People Matters, your day will involve providing practical, hands‑on advice and support on a variety of Employee Relations cases. You'll have the flexibility to work both virtually and from the office. You'll be surrounded by a network of experienced professionals, ensuring you have the support and resources needed to excel in your role.

Skills and experience that will lead to success
  • Excellent technical employee relations and employment law knowledge gained through employee relations, human resources generalist experience or through relevant experience in a management or legal role
  • Able to act with sensitivity and diplomacy in dealing with challenging people issues
  • Proven commercial approach with a good understanding of business needs and able to make sound judgements
  • Experience of advising and influencing line managers and adept at handling difficult conversations
  • Ability to prioritise in a fast‑paced environment, manage workload to deliver to tight deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Ability to work as a team, recognise boundaries of own expertise and seek input from others as needed
  • Degree educated or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to effectively utilise IT applications and systems including Excel, PowerPoint, Word.
