Job Overview
The Division of Technology Services is seeking a motivated individual to be the technical expert for an application development team supporting the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). UDOT is transitioning from legacy applications to modern cloud platforms and SaaS solutions. Data pipelines and APIs within GCP/Google Big Query will be critical in stitching old and new pieces together. The successful candidate will be experienced in establishing and enforcing data architecture and application architecture standards within a cloud environment.
The IT Architect provides ongoing technical mentorship and guidance as an internal consultant within Technology Services and serves as a technical resource for IT Analysts. They direct the analysis, design, and implementation of software programs that support UDOT clients, employees, and the organization’s mission. The IT Architect documents or approves the documentation of systems and programming actions from initial design through maintenance and problem resolution.
This role is distinguished from an IT Analyst by its focus on architecting new projects, identifying solutions for complex technical challenges, and recommending improvements to team standards or the technical stack to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the integrity of the development environment.
This position provides technical leadership but does not supervise employees.
Location & Work ArrangementsThis position is a hybrid of both in-office and telework days; 2 days a week are required in office, and any mandatory in-office meetings. The office location is at the Calvin Rampton Building, 4501 South 2700 West, Taylorsville. All remote work must be performed within Utah.
Responsibilities- Lead architectural design and implementation of new projects and complex solutions in a cloud environment.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to team members, focusing on architectural principles, system design, and best practices.
- Collaborate with cross‑team stakeholders (application teams, Dev Ops, business product owners) to ensure alignment on technical standards, integration points, and system designs.
- Develop and maintain development standards that promote secure, reliable, maintainable systems.
- Manage risk, identify mitigation strategies, and resolve architectural conflicts.
- Coordinate agile processes, ensuring technical alignment and adherence to best practices.
- Support continuous integration / continuous delivery (CI/CD) initiatives and integration architecture.
- Review proposed architecture with Dev Ops and development leads before stakeholder approval.
- When required, contribute as a developer to projects where advanced expertise is necessary.
- Master’s or bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Multiple years of proven technical leadership in solution architecture, application development, cloud data engineering, and/or cybersecurity.
- Advanced knowledge of computer science principles and emerging technologies.
- Experience managing data in large‑scale warehouses, modeling complex applications, and building public/private APIs.
- Experience automating testing and deployment of applications.
- analytical, planning, and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing demands and make sound decisions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Knowledge of NIST standards and federal regulatory frameworks.
- Public‑sector experience is a plus.
- Google Cloud development or engineering or other relevant certifications preferred.
- Preference may be given to current Technology Services employees.
