About

The Role

We are seeking a Data Scientist (AI/ML focus) to support the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (HUD OCIO). The Data Scientist will analyze, model, and simulate data supporting HUD AI/ML proofs of concept and pilots. Additionally, the Data Scientist will develop predictive models, simulations, and decision-theory frameworks to enhance system functionality, operational efficiency, and mission alignment.

This is a fully remote position. Candidates must reside in the United States.

Responsibilities
  • Develop statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and simulations using Python.
  • Analyze HUD datasets, implement data preprocessing, and assess data quality for AI workflows.
  • Collaborate with HCD/UX and front-end teams to ensure models are operationalized effectively.
  • Evaluate model performance, validate results, and iterate for improvement.
  • Support AI governance by documenting models, decisions, assumptions, and ethical safeguards.
  • Maintain version-controlled code and reproducible workflows for HUD audit and compliance.
Requirements Required Experience and Skills
  • 5+ years of experience in data science, statistical modeling, or AI/ML projects.
  • Experience developing predictive models, simulations, and decision-support tools.
  • Familiarity with federal datasets and AI governance requirements preferred.
  • Strong data processing, cleaning, transformation, and engineering capabilities.
  • Federal-scale datasets, such as SQL, No

    SQL, Spark, Kafka, or cloud-native pipelines.
  • Previous experience supporting HUD OCIO preferred.
  • Ability to pass required Federal background screening and obtain and maintain both government clearance and customer approval.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
Technical Skills
  • Python (pandas, Num Py, scikit-learn, Tensor Flow/PyTorch)
  • Statistical modeling, simulation, and decision theory
  • Data visualization:
    Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly
  • Version control:
    Git/Git Hub/Git Lab
  • Experience with AI/ML lifecycle and reproducible workflows

Physical Requirements
  • Candidates must reside in or within daily commuting distance of Washington, D.C.
  • Must be willing and able to travel an estimated 25% of time within the U.S.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
