Role DescriptionThe Data Architect will serve as the agency’s principal professional on data architecture, data governance, and enterprise data modeling. The position designs and oversees modern, compliant data solutions across multiple technologies and environments; establishes and maintains enterprise-wide data architecture standards and policies; and leads automated, reproducible database deployment practices. The role provides strategic technical consultation on database design, leads complex data architecture efforts, manages data‑modeling tools and standards, and collaborates with database administrators, application developers, project managers, and business partners.
Responsibilities- Act as lead subject matter expert on data architecture, tool stack, and best practices for the Enterprise AI and Data Services (EADS) Team.
- Liaise with TSD teams and business customers on data architecture solutions for ingestion, consumption, security, governance, modernization, and innovation.
- Implement and support automated deployment methodologies for data systems.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to design scalable, secure, maintainable data solutions aligned with enterprise standards.
- Lead data governance, architecture, and modeling across business, development, DBA, and project teams.
- Represent WSDOT, TSD, and EADS by communicating, presenting, and promoting data architecture standards.
- Create technical requirements documents, data models, physical schemas, and SQL scripts.
- Experience using Azure Dev Ops for automated database build, deployment, and reproducibility.
- Ability to train team members in deployment best practices.
- Expertise creating data science, engineering, and integration solutions on big‑data platforms and analytics.
- Experience architecting and implementing complex technology solutions.
- Ability to design AI‑ready data solutions.
- Independent leadership across all phases of data management and application development.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent communication with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Proven skills in designing modern data platforms (cloud/hybrid) and full data modeling life cycle.
- Experience with relational databases, data warehousing, ODS, analytics, and security frameworks.
- Understanding of standard data ingestion and consumption patterns.
- Experience with Azure Synapse, Fabric, Snowflake, Databricks, PySpark.
- Proficient in Microsoft T‑SQL for queries, schema creation, and administrative tasks.
- Optimization of SQL queries for performance.
- Effectively elicits and documents business requirements.
- Translates needs into data models and technical specifications.
- Ensures requirements align with project goals.
- Works effectively within cross‑functional teams.
- Facilitates open communication and collaboration.
- Builds consensus and integrates diverse perspectives.
- Develops processes for database design and data modeling.
- Oversees data modeling project activities and reviews.
- Identifies staff training needs.
- TOGAF, Azure/AWS Solutions Architect.
- Expertise in modern data architecture patterns (Data Lake, Data Mesh, data fabric, Kimball, ETL).
- Proficiency in geospatial database design.
- Technical documentation and knowledge management.
- Continuous learning mindset.
