Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems. We are hiring a Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer to our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is an automation‑first technologist passionate about Linux and infrastructure as code.
Job SummaryThe IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical’s IT production services used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As an SRE & Gitops engineer you will drive operations automation in both private and public clouds using open source infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical’s leading products for software operation automation.
LocationThis role is available remotely in any timezone.
Responsibilities- Apply IaC to develop automation within IS, improving IaC processes.
- Automate software operations for re‑usability and consistency across private and public cloud environments.
- Develop new features and improve resilience and scalability of Canonical’s cloud and container portfolio.
- Maintain operational responsibility for Canonical’s core services, networks, and infrastructure.
- Setup, maintain, and use observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch; design, implement, and maintain monitoring and alerting.
- Collaborate with development teams to design service architecture, documentation, playbooks, policies, and operational procedures.
- Provide assistance and work with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support peers.
- Focus on larger projects and automation of manual tasks.
- Share knowledge with team members through design sessions, mentorship, and collaboration.
- Carry final responsibility for time‑critical escalations.
- Deep experience defining operations in code using version control, peer review, and CI/CD for both applications and infrastructure.
- Strong modern engineering background (peer‑review, unit testing, SCM, CI/CD, Agile).
- Python software development experience with large projects.
- Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
- Affinity with various Linux storage technologies from Ceph to databases.
- Hands‑on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
- Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
- Bachelor’s degree or greater in computer science or related engineering field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
- Motivated to troubleshoot from kernel to web and willing to ask for help when appropriate.
- Flexible and quick learner of new technologies.
- Passion for open‑source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
