Job Summary

The Information Systems (IS) team at Canonical supports and maintains all of Canonical’s IT production services, running services used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As an SRE & Git Ops engineer you will drive operations automation using open‑source infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines and Canonical’s leading products, improving infrastructure and contributing to open‑source projects.

Responsibilities

• Apply IaC to develop practice within IS, increasing automation and improving processes.
• Automate software operations for re‑usability and consistency across private and public clouds.
• Develop new features and improve resilience and scalability of cloud and container portfolio.
• Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks and infrastructure.
• Set up, maintain and use observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch), design and maintain monitoring and alerting.
• Collaborate with dev teams to design service architecture, documentation, playbooks, policies and procedures.
• Assist and work with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support peers.
• Spend uninterrupted development time on automation of manual tasks.
• Share experience, best practices, and mentor teammates.
• Carry final responsibility for time‑critical escalations.

Qualifications

• Deep experience in operations in code using version control, peer review, CI/CD for applications and infrastructure.
• Strong background in modern engineering practices (peer‑review, unit testing, SCM, CI/CD, Agile).
• Python software development experience with large projects.
• Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
• Affinity with various Linux storage:
  Ceph, databases.
• Hands‑on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
• Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
• Bachelor’s degree (or greater) in computer science or related field.
• Effective communication in English (email, chat, video, calls).
• Motivated to troubleshoot from kernel to web and willing to seek help.
• Flexible, eager to learn new things quickly.
• Inspired by fast‑changing environments.
• Comfortable working within distributed teams.
• Passionate about open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
