GDIT is seeking a Sr. Cloud Engineer (AWS) to support our National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) team in Rockville, MD. As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will work closely with other innovative and savvy people to engineer custom solutions in the Cloud, collaborate regularly with product owners to deploy custom line-of-business, scientific, and high performance computing (HPC) applications, and help streamline our users' operations and processes while further adopting Dev Ops best practices.
Candidates with a focus on innovation and automation are a plus. This role is remote, but proximity to Rockville, MD is preferred for possible meetings.
- Collaborate with product owners (researchers and software developers) to identify and design topologies for custom business and scientific applications on AWS as part of our custom platform.
- Provide guidance for adhering to best practices for optimal and secure use of cloud technologies.
- Assist development teams in migrating their products from on‑prem infrastructure to AWS, often requiring refactoring application architecture and breaking down monolithic applications into micro‑service or serverless workloads.
- Train product teams in AWS cloud technologies and frameworks to set up environments, build and deploy applications, and automate operational needs.
- Work with other Cloud Solutions Engineers to develop prototypes and enhance or expand fundamental capabilities offered on the platform, such as CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and containerized, serverless workloads, and high performance computing.
- Participate in daily stand‑up meetings to report accomplishments, plans for the day, and any roadblocks.
- Act as an AWS Cloud Subject Matter Expert (SME) on cross‑functional teams to help further the organization’s mission.
- Occasionally present to team, software developer colleagues, and researchers on Dev Ops best practices, new and interesting cloud technologies, and solutions to challenging technical issues during Tech Talks webinars.
- Technical training, certifications, and/or degree with 8+ years of related experience.
- 3+ years of experience with AWS (e.g., ECS, EC2, S3, Parallel Cluster, Systems Manager, Lambda).
- Working knowledge of infrastructure‑as‑code (IaC) frameworks such as Terraform or Cloud Formation, including writing templates and modules from scratch, and experience with configuration management frameworks.
- Knowledge of containerization and hands‑on experience in containerizing software applications; experience with container orchestration and deployment platforms such as AWS ECS and AWS EKS.
- Experience implementing and managing CI/CD workflows using Git Hub Actions, Jenkins, or similar tools.
- Experience analyzing solution components, understanding systems integration challenges, and identifying technology gaps in current components to reach future performance targets and functionality requirements in cloud infrastructure.
- Experience presenting ideas to both technical and non‑technical users.
- Experience writing comprehensive technical documentation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a NIH Public Trust clearance.
- Experience designing and implementing technologies using micro‑service architecture in a Federal Scientific Health Research environment.
- Experience refactoring applications into cloud‑native applications.
- Experience consulting scientists, researchers, and developers on designing, migrating, and optimizing their solutions on AWS services.
- Within commuting distance to the Rockville, MD area is strongly preferred.
