Distinguished Engineer – Business Continuity, Governance, and Platform Resilience
GEICO is seeking an experienced Distinguished Engineer with a passion for building high‑performance, low‑maintenance, zero‑downtime platforms and applications. You will help drive our enterprise transformation by establishing engineering excellence as a core mission, with a specific focus on organizational resilience, strategic risk management, and rigorous technical governance. This role demands mastery of reliability, availability, software engineering, and best practices in BCDR.
Responsibilities- Enterprise Resilience and BCDR Strategy: Lead the technical BCDR strategy, conduct comprehensive risk assessments, architect highly resilient systems, and define organization‑wide RTO and RPO metrics. Validate recovery targets through regular BCDR simulations and Chaos Engineering programs.
- Governance, Standards, and Architectural Oversight: Serve on the Architecture Review Board, enforce architectural standards and policies, ensure strategic alignment of technology investments, and drive modernization efforts for scalability and coherence.
- Operational Excellence and Case Management: Own the SRE strategy, establish and monitor SLOs and error budgets, develop incident response playbooks and runbooks, drive automation for low MTTR, and analyze post‑incident results to increase MTBF.
- Leadership and Strategic Influence: Serve as a trusted advisor to executive stakeholders on resilience and governance, mentor senior and principal engineering talent, and analyze cost and forecast data for cloud spend optimization.
- Fluency and specialization in software development using modern programming languages.
- Deep knowledge of SRE practices, cloud‑based compute, network, and storage technologies.
- Strong background in incident management, creating playbooks, runbooks, and rigorous post‑incident analysis.
- Expertise in distributed systems architecture, replication topologies, and consistency patterns for stringent RTO and RPO.
- Understanding of SQL and No
SQL databases, stateful services management, and storage optimization for resilience and cloud cost efficiency. - In‑depth knowledge of hybrid cloud architecture, IaaS and PaaS, container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), and cloud efficiency.
- Experience with infrastructure automation, tooling, and configuration management (e.g., Ansible, Terraform).
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills and a passion for mentoring.
- Visionary thinker who anticipates future challenges in resilience and governance.
- Proven track record of leading, designing, and delivering complex engineering projects in large, complex organizations.
- 12+ years of professional software development experience.
- 10+ years of experience with architecture and design.
- 6+ years of experience with open‑source frameworks.
- 6+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience.
