Job SummaryThis position is a data center technician working for the Center for High Performance Computing ( CHPC ). This position will be responsible for racking and installing servers, cabling, security equipment, inventory, and helping to maintain the day-to-day operations of Ethernet switches, Infini Band switches, routers, and firewalls. The job will require lifting equipment and operating a server lift in order to mount equipment into racks.
The applicant will need to be familiar with power tools, and have an attention to detail. In addition, the job will also involve gaining familiarity with water cooling, power, air flow, and other environmental aspects, as well as some networking topics.
The position will also require learning and understanding basic problem solving as troubleshooting end hosts and end-to-end connectivity issues.
The job will be almost exclusively on-site work at the University of Utah’s Downtown Data Center. The position will work mostly 8am-5pm between office and datacenter environments with flexibility for occasional remote work, with appropriate communication ahead of time.
The position will develop skills in and work with network protocols such as IPv4, IPv6, SNMP, IB over IP, etc. The position will work closely with the Center for High Performance Computing ( CHPC ) monitoring team to pull metrics from network and environmental devices. The position will also develop skills in automation and data center management.
The applicant should have some basic Linux skills and basic Windows skills in order to help troubleshoot network stacks to the end devices in collaboration with others. The position is highly collaborative and requires working with different people throughout CHPC , as well as working with the University of Utah Downtown Data Center team. The position will also be responsible in helping to troubleshoot, inventory, maintain and thoroughly document all aspects of the data center, including environmental monitoring, which CHPC maintains.
The position will be responsible for interacting with end users and following up on service tickets relating to data center and some network issues.
- Racking and installing servers

- Day-to-day basic operating of Ethernet switches, Infini Band switches, routers, and firewalls
- Managing environmental sensors
Required Qualifications:
- Familiarity with electrical systems, connections, etc.
- Familiarity with managing data center loads
- Familiarity with cable terminations
- Basic Command Line Interface skills in Windows and Linux/Mac
- Ability to lift and install equipment in a data center
- Familiarity with power tools, mechanical troubleshooting
- Ability to work in a data center environment for long periods of time working with others to troubleshoot
- Good communication and troubleshooting skills
- Knowledge of ethernet and how it functions
- Knowledge of VLANs
- Basic Linux and Windows end host network troubleshooting
- Knowledge of SNMP
