About the role
As a Sr. Data Engineer
, you will make an impact by designing and scaling modern cloud-based data ecosystems that power real-time insights, analytics, and business-critical decision making. You will be a valued member of the data engineering team and collaborate closely with cloud architects, product owners, security partners, and cross-functional engineering squads.
- Build and optimize large-scale, distributed data pipelines using GCP services (Big Query, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage) to support complex analytics and operational workloads.
- Lead and contribute to enterprise-scale cloud migration initiatives, including mapping legacy schemas, consolidating dependencies, and driving dual-execution validation.
- Architect and deploy unified batch + streaming ingestion frameworks to enable near real-time dashboards and low-latency data processing.
- Improve data reliability, performance, and uptime through pipeline refactoring, automation, and quality frameworks.
- Partner with governance, risk, and security teams to implement compliance controls (HIPAA/PII/PHI) across cloud environments.

- 15+ years of experience in data engineering, building large-scale distributed data systems and cloud-based architectures.
- Expertise in GCP (Big Query, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Dataproc, Cloud Storage), big data frameworks, and modern ETL/ELT patterns.
- Proficiency in Python, PySpark, SQL, and scripting languages.
- Experience designing data models, data warehouses, data lakes, and scalable schema architectures (Star/Snowflake).
- Strong background in data governance, security, and compliance frameworks, including HIPAA/PII standards.
- Demonstrated success optimizing query performance, reducing cloud spend, and increasing system reliability and data freshness.
- Experience leading cross-functional Agile teams, including offshore/onshore collaboration models.
- Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer certification.
- Hands-on experience modernizing legacy ETL tools (Ab Initio, Informatica) and building reusable engineering frameworks.
- Background implementing CI/CD pipelines (Git Hub, Jenkins, UDeploy) for data and analytics ecosystems.
- Experience supporting financial, risk, fraud, actuarial, or customer intelligence use cases at scale.
- Track record developing enterprise data standards, migration patterns, and technical roadmaps.
- Strong communication and leadership skills—able to mentor engineering teams and drive architecture decisions.

The annual salary for this position is between $ 115,000 - $ 130,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
