Supervisor of eDiscovery
Thompson Coburn LLP is a large full‑service law firm with offices in eight cities across the U.S. We are seeking a full‑time exempt Supervisor of eDiscovery to join one of our offices in Chicago, Dallas, or St. Louis.
Compensation: $52,500 – $65,000 per year.
The Supervisor of eDiscovery will manage the full eDiscovery life cycle of a matter, from early case assessment through pre‑trial. The role will oversee collection, processing, review, and production of data and define, communicate, and execute requirements for each matter in collaboration with attorneys, Client Technology Services (CTS), and business partners. After a period of training the position is eligible for a hybrid‑remote work schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the daily workflow and workload of Case Managers and similar roles across the team, focusing on legal team support for eDiscovery services.
- Identify the most effective use of technology for litigation and matter support; take ownership of issues and manage risks as appropriate.
- Evaluate work performance by Case Managers and ensure quality of work meets performance standards.
- Reinforce and provide eDiscovery support escalations to maximize legal team productivity and experience.
- Provide direction and training to CTS staff and legal teams on workflow and best practices for eDiscovery preparation.
- Serve as the primary contact for legal teams and clients for the management of eDiscovery and litigation support services and provide case‐specific day‑to‑day technical support activities for assigned matters.
- Provide consulting services to legal teams and clients in the areas of early case assessment, eDiscovery collection, processing, review, and production.
- Consult with legal teams on eDiscovery support strategy and provide cost estimates, timelines, and identification of internal and external resources.
- Constantly seek to improve the Firm’s eDiscovery capabilities and contribute to developing CTS policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Train and support legal teams in the use of litigation technology.
- Collaborate with project managers and legal teams to provide clients with quality solutions and deliverables and support the work of other team members.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Excellent technical, written, and verbal communication skills to work effectively with legal teams and staff, and serve as an escalation point.
- Proficiency in Relativity or a comparable sophisticated eDiscovery platform, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and other business productivity applications.
- Knowledge of document imaging formats, load files, and database applications.
- Knowledge of standard Microsoft environments sufficient to provide consulting services on email and loose file collections.
- Knowledge of collection procedures and industry tools sufficient to provide consulting services on defensible collections.
- Ability to provide training in legal technology solutions to the internal team (CTS) and legal teams.
- High level of professionalism and interpersonal skills to work well with employees at all levels within the organization and maintain strict confidentiality; use of tact and diplomacy when dealing with others.
- Attention to detail, ability to balance multiple projects, and strong time‑management skills.
- Ability to process routine daily functions while resolving sensitive issues and complex assignments using above‑average critical thinking skills.
- Ability to prioritize and handle competing demands in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to travel as necessary.
Experience and Education Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required.
- Minimum five (5) years of litigation or litigation support experience as an eDiscovery project manager or similar role.
- Prior experience coaching team members and serving as a subject matter expert preferred.
