This position allows for a flexible work schedule including work from home options.
The Network Engineer is responsible for the configuration, installation, operation and support of the County Local and Wide Area Networks including internal and external Internet communications systems. Network Infrastructure, including LAN/WAN management, telecommunications, traffic management and routing. Security of the St. Clair County Network, including disaster recovery and data protection.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Oversees and ensures integrity of confidential electronic data.
- Identifies and provides recommendations for technology solutions.
- Server installation, maintenance and administration.
- Provides documentation and cross training to other IT support staff.
- Coordinates operational and technical support from outside vendors.
- Remain current with the newest communications protocols.
- Provides assistance with research, evaluation and recommendation of hardware and software technologies.
- Provides input to the Information Technology strategies and plans.
- Meets with Management Team to identify technology solutions.
- Administration of Microsoft Active Directory.
- Administration of firewalls, switches, routers and virtual servers.
- Assists IT staff with advanced problem resolution.
- Assists with level 2 on call support.
- Ensures security of confidential data including but not limited to personnel records, medical records and criminal justice information.
- Documents system configurations and changes.
- Transports computer equipment which may weigh as much as fifty (50) pounds.
- Complies with all safety rules and regulations and County policies.
- Supports the continuous quality improvement efforts and "Systems Thinking" philosophy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Information Technology Director.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThe Senior Network Engineer provides coordination and training of staff as related to projects, system maintenance and implementations.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, EDUCATION- A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field is required.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience administering a complex wide area network is required.
- A current CCNA certification is preferred.
- Additional verifiable equivalent experience in Information Technology field will substitute for up to two years of education.
- Proven ability to understand and utilize a variety of technologies and applications in order to effectively support clients.
- Must be proficient in the use of Windows workstations and servers, printers, communications devices and other related peripheral devices.
- Proficient in administration and configuration of mainstream virtualization technologies and desktop virtualization.
- Writing, reading, mathematical principles; proficient computer skills-Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook; exercise sound judgment and decision making in accordance with policies and procedures; ability to research and problem solve independently; knowledge of County operations and functions; ability to prioritize and time manage; handle stressful situations, provide effective and friendly customer service; support the County's mission and values; ability to think critically where necessary.
- Knowledge or understanding of basic administrative tasks: operate standard office equipment; document management; prepare and maintain records, various correspondences and reports; answer general inquiries and refer as necessary; answer telephone calls, process mail, order supplies/equipment; prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, record/transcribe/distribute minutes; entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic form with speed and accuracy; maintain calendars, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment as necessary.
- Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with management, co-workers and clients; obtain and communicate accurate information; apply common sense understanding to complex instructions and respond accordingly; communicate complex ideas through graphs, charts, presentations, reports or other professional correspondence.
- Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.
- Ability to read, write & communicate in English; follow written and verbal instruction and understand basic mathematics and figure checking.
- Ability to interpret and apply procedures, rules, technical information, instructions, manuals to complete tasks accurately and on schedule.
- Ability to learn from directions, observations, and mistakes; and apply procedures using good judgment.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain sensitive and confidential information.
- Ability to work independently or part of a team; ability to interact appropriately with others such as County officials, employees, vendors and the general public.
