If you're a foreign citizen seeking work opportunities in the UK for a short period, you must apply for a Tier 5 Visa UK. This visa is suitable for stays of less than 12 months and is available for roles such as volunteer artists, diplomats, entertainers, or sportspeople.

To qualify for a Tier 5 Visa UK, you typically need a job offer from an employer authorized to hire foreign workers. There are several subcategories of the UK Tier 5 Visa, depending on the nature of your work. You must meet the 40-point threshold, which requires a sponsor, a Certificate of Sponsorship, and proof of sufficient funds. An exception is the Youth Mobility Scheme, allowing citizens of certain Commonwealth countries to apply without a job offer, though it is not solely a work visa.

You need proof of sponsorship from an authorized sponsor, demonstrating that your work or education in the UK is related to your sponsor's activities.

Your sponsor could be:

• An organization approved to operate an exchange scheme

You can submit your application up to three months before your planned move or start date, as indicated on your Certificate of Sponsorship.

If your application is complete, you will receive a response from the Home Office within three weeks. Processing times may be shorter if applying from outside the UK.

Eligible US citizens currently in the UK can apply to extend their Tier 5 Visa for:

• Up to 12 months for work experience or internships
• Up to 24 months for training or research activities
• Up to 24 months for participation in the Overseas Government Language Programme
