Overview
We’re looking for a highly capable, hands‑on infrastructure engineer to join our IT Operations team at The National Archives. This role requires strong technical depth, comfort operating across complex environments, and ownership of real production services. You’ll diagnose issues, restore services, lead infrastructure change, and contribute to design and improvement of the systems we rely on every day.
Responsibilities- Diagnose, investigate, and restore services across a wide production environment that includes cloud, network, and on‑prem systems.
- Lead and implement infrastructure change, ensuring a controlled and deliberate approach.
- Monitor systems proactively, identify risks, and pursue opportunities for improvement.
- Contribute to strengthening security, resilience and overall service reliability.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues, stakeholders and suppliers to deliver and improve services.
- Help shape ongoing development of the environment and provide input into technical design.
You will be working across a varied and evolving technical estate that includes Microsoft 365, Azure, cloud and on‑prem infrastructure, networking, virtualization, and enterprise storage and backup platforms.
Qualifications- Strong experience designing, supporting and maintaining enterprise infrastructure across cloud and on‑prem environments.
- Solid understanding of infrastructure, networking and security fundamentals.
- Ability to diagnose complex issues, identify root causes and implement long‑term fixes.
- Experience delivering change in live environments with clear appreciation of risk, dependencies and control.
- Strong technical foundation and adaptability to unfamiliar or evolving situations.
- SC clearance or willingness to obtain SC clearance; residency in the UK for at least the past three years.
This is a full‑time post. Requests for part‑time working, flexible working and job share will be considered, taking into account the operational needs of the Department. A combination of onsite and home working is available. Applicants should be able to travel to our Kew site for a minimum of 60% of their work time.
