Lead Data Engineer (or Architect) – role in the public sector at Made Tech. You will design and build scalable data platforms, guide delivery teams on data‑centric practices, and manage cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Define, shape and implement data strategies for central and local government clients.
- Help public sector teams understand the value of their data and guide them to maximise its use.
- Act as a trusted advisor on data‑driven approaches, leveraging public cloud services such as AWS, Azure and GCP.
- Contribute to recruitment and line‑management responsibilities as the team grows.
- Proficiency with Git (incl. Git Hub Actions) and knowledge of branching strategies.
- Strong experience with Infrastructure‑as‑Code, capable of deploying infrastructure across environments.
- Hands‑on experience handling and transforming data types (JSON, CSV, etc.) with Spark, Databricks or Hadoop.
- Comprehensive understanding of modern data architectures:
Data Warehouses, Data Lakes, Data Meshes. - Ability to build data pipelines on cloud platforms with integrated error handling.
- Experience creating reusable libraries to ensure consistency across pipelines.
- Skill in documenting and presenting system diagrams (C4, UML, etc.) for cloud environments.
- Enthusiasm for continuous learning and self‑development.
- Experience in agile delivery environments using Scrum, XP, or Kanban.
- Ownership of cloud infrastructure for data systems using a Dev Ops approach.
- Design and implement efficient batch and streaming data transformation processes at scale.
- Track record of delivering complete data platforms.
- Knowledge of SOLID, DRY and TDD principles and their practical application.
- Commercial mindset, able to grow accounts with senior stakeholders.
- Ability to enhance project resilience by testing for vulnerabilities (unit, integration, data quality).
- Experience guiding robust Dev Ops practices for data projects.
- Comfortable discussing tools such as Data Ops for orchestration, integration, and analytics.
- Background in a technology consultancy.
- Experience with Docker, virtual environments, CI/CD pipelines.
- Engagement with senior stakeholders for requirements gathering.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams (pair or mob programming).
- Product ionise of advanced data deliverables, such as machine learning models.
- Working knowledge of statistics.
- Experience with in the public sector.
