A national charity is appointing an Enterprise AI Architect for a six-month engagement to define how AI will work across the organisation. AI use is currently developing in pockets across different teams, and the organisation now needs a single architectural view, a prioritised roadmap and a set of design standards that everyone can work to.

Our client operates nationally alongside frontline services the public relies on. AI here has to be trustworthy, accessible and explainable, and the standards set in this engagement will shape how the organisation uses it for years. It is a genuine blank sheet on a technology-for-good programme, with the scope covering architecture, strategy and standards in a single seat.

The role sits within Enterprise Architecture, reporting to the Head of Applications and Governance. It is an architecture, design authority and enablement position rather than a build role.

The engagement covers four areas.
  • Enterprise AI architecture: Current, transition and target states supported by an AI capability model. The role of existing and emerging platforms, with selection criteria, guardrails and exception routes. Integration patterns for AI access to APIs, events, workflows and data platforms. A scalable agent architecture covering identity, authentication, delegated actions, human-in-the-loop controls, context and memory, registration, ownership, versioning and retirement. Observability requirements including minimum telemetry and audit evidence showing which agent acted, for whom, and using which model, tools and data.
  • AI strategy and five-year roadmap: Working across every directorate to build a catalogue of AI opportunities, assessing each for strategic fit, value, readiness, risk, complexity, dependency, cost and time to value, and producing a prioritised five-year roadmap linked to the organisation's wider business, application, data and technology roadmaps.
  • Design standards and enablement: AI and agent design principles, minimum design standards, reusable patterns and reference designs. Running design clinics, workshops and worked examples to support AI advocates across the business. This forms a substantial part of the engagement, so the successful architect will need to enjoy teaching as much as designing.
  • Governance alignment: Joining technical assurance up with data governance, information security, data protection, legal, risk and service management so there is one proportionate review route rather than several.
  • Priority deliverables: are the enterprise AI target architecture, a scalable agent architecture framework, AI observability and operational architecture, the five-year AI roadmap, AI design principles, AI and agent design standards, and an integrated governance and technical assurance framework. Knowledge transfer to permanent colleagues forms part of the engagement.
Background required:
  • Enterprise or solution architecture experience in a large, complex organisation, with a move into AI and data architecture
  • Enterprise AI target architecture or capability model work that has been approved and used in practice
  • Practical experience defining agent architecture: identity and permissions, delegated actions, human-in-the-loop approval, lifecycle, registration and observability
  • Experience assessing and prioritising AI opportunities across multiple business areas and turning that into a multi-year roadmap
  • Understanding of knowledge and data architecture for AI - authoritative sources, retrieval, metadata, permissions and content…
